About AS Bikes
AS Bikes is a family business: Peter Drakeford, Sam and Mike. We design, build and service folding electric bikes and trikes at Lakeview Farm in Warwickshire, and we have been family run since 2001.
It started on a canal boat
The business began on a canal boat. The family wanted bikes they could take with them, and they could not find a decent folding push bike that would fit in the bilge. So they made their own.
The first two were folding pedal bikes, one with 16 inch wheels and one with 20 inch wheels. Electric came next, as the market grew. The MK1 had a 180W motor and a 24V battery, the most the regulations allowed at the time. The MK2 moved up to 200W and a lithium battery, and the MK3 Electrobike is the one we build today. We were also one of the first in the UK to sell a fully folding bike with full-size 26 inch wheels, which is what the Electrobike Plus has now.
Most of the people who ride our machines own a motorhome, a caravan or a boat, just as we did. That is why everything we make folds.
A working life of fixing things
Before AS Bikes, Peter ran a speedway motorbike shop for 13 years and then a large village garage for 10 years. That is where the engineering comes from. Every machine we sell is built and checked by the family at the farm before it leaves, and we service what we sell.
Why we built a trike
The Electrotricycle exists because our customers asked for it. Many of them wanted to keep riding, or to ride alongside a partner again, without the worry of falling. Three wheels mean it stands up on its own: you can stop, rest and set off again without putting a foot down, and the dual parking brakes hold it steady while you get on and off.
Peter designed it himself and patented the way it folds. It is Britain's only fully folding electric tricycle. It folds in about 30 seconds to 16 inches wide, so it goes through a motorhome or caravan door and packs away wherever you are going.
Still here, and still answering the phone
New bike companies appear every year, and many do not last, which leaves their customers without spares or service. We stock spares for every model we have ever sold, and we always will. Customers are still riding 13-year-old AS bikes.
There is a one-year no-quibble warranty, we service customers' bikes free at most shows, and when you ring you get the family, not a queue.
